Solution

12/20 + 8/20 = 20/20 (that is the whole pizza and there would be none for me after Mom and Dad ate theirs.)
So dad needs to buy at least 10/20 more or another ½ a pizza, so I can have 6/10 and then there are 4 pieces left for anyone who might get hungry later.)
12/20 + 8/20 + 6/20= 26/20 or 1  6/20

solution

Solution

3/10 + 1/10 + 2/10 = 6/10 or 3/5 was eaten.
There are 4 pieces left over or 4/10 or 2/5.

Word Stories by Fifth Grade Math Students

one of the fifth grade math word stories

Solution

4/5 x 40/1 = 4/1 x 8/1 = 32

1/5 x 40/1 = 4/1 x 1/1 = 8

Check: 32 + 8 = 40

Solution

3/6 x 72/1 = 3/1 x 12/1= 36 berries for Alex.
(Or it is ½ of 72 = 36)

2/6 x 72/1= 2/1 x 12/1= 24 berries for Sofie.
36 + 24 = 60 total berries picked.
12 berries eaten by the 2 of them!
