Ms. Flanagan’s Title I kindergarten students at Al Qalam Academy took advantage of the snowy day to work with winter words, both writing them and reading them.

First, Ms. Flanagan and the students read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. As we read, we made connections between the illustrations and the text. Students made predictions about what would happen next in the story and then checked their predictions as we read together.

Next, we read Winter on Reading A-Z.

Winter by Vic Moors to study winter words

Student identified the first letter of the following winter words:

  • winter,
  • snow,
  • snowman,
  • skates,
  • sled, and
  • mittens.

winter Words

We wrote these words and then segmented some words into syllables, clapping each word out.

Finally, we wrote sentences about snow: I make a snowman. Students used Jamboard to trace the words in the sentence and then some added an illustration.
