Christ the King first through third grade Title I students are learning to make text-to-self connections to a book titled The Art Lesson.

book THE ART LESSON by Tomie dePaola

Ms. Bauserman is utilizing the Comprehension Tool Kit to teach reading strategies to her first, second, and third graders.

Monitor Comprehension for The Art Lesson Text-to-Self Connections

The first lesson used the book The Art Lesson by Tomie dePaola. Ms. Bauserman and the students read the story aloud. During the reading, students paused to write down

  • “I Wonder…” or
  • “I Notice…” statements

as they made text-to-self connections to the book, The Art Lesson.

Students then wrote a response to literature and drew a picture. They could choose to write about any of the following three topics:

  • What they wanted to be when they grew up. [Tomie knew in kindergarten that he wanted to be an artist].
  • What they particularly loved to do. [Tomie loved drawing]
    or
  • To write another text-to-self connection they made with the book [Ms. Bauserman demonstrated by drawing a picture of herself thinking of her daughter who also loves art].
