Ms. Furlong’s Title I first graders at St. Anthony of Padua School are working on the math activity of analyzing bar graphs. They used bar graphs addressing the following question: What is your favorite color?

Favorite Color Sentence Frames

First, the students orally answering questions about different bar graphs charting favorite colors. On day one we asked and answered questions using the following sentence frames:

  • How many kids liked the color _____ ?
  • What color did kids like the most?_____
  • What color did kids like the least?______

Some students used colored squares to help them count the same number on the graph.

On day two we asked and answered questions in our journal entries using the sentence frame:

  • How many more kids liked ____ than _____?

We used colored squares to help us figure out the answers.

What is your favorite color? Bar Graphs

Next, students created their own What Is Your Favorite Color? bar graph. The first graders wrote questions using the same sentence frames we had worked with on previous days. Students answered their own questions and covered their answers with sticky notes.
