St. Thomas More Title I second through fifth graders and their parents participated in a parent-student workshop and learned about snow crystals and flakes. Ms. Anderson held the workshop on December 10th. The purpose of the workshop was to assist students and parents in using visualization to help understand nonfiction texts.

Second through fifth graders and their parents were inspired by The Story of Snow by Mark Cassino and Jon Nelson.

THE STORY OF SNOW

First, they practiced making a movie in their heads. Subsequently, they drew and labeled  a diagram.  Then the students created and labeled a model of a snow crystal based on the information in this scientific text. Finally, students synthesized their learning in follow-up classes by writing about what they had learned about snow crystals and flakes.
