Ms. Green’s  second and third grade Title I group at Portsmouth Catholic Regional School are learning how to write key word summaries.  What is a key word summary? It is a written summary using key words students identified from each page of a nonfiction book they read.

First, each read a nonfiction book on his or her instructional level.  After reading, they picked key words for each page. Next, they used the key words to write sentences that summarized what they read in the book.  The concept of a key word summary comes from Jan Richardson’s  The Next Step Forward book.
