Title I third, fourth and fifth grade Math students taught by Ms. White at Our Lady of Lourdes used Splat! to learn number sense. They are learning the important math foundation of number bonds and how numbers are connected, or number sense.
- First, a number is a whole made up of parts.
- If you know the parts, you can put them together (add) to find the whole.
- If you know the whole and one of the parts, you can take away the part you know (subtract) to find the other part.
To help visualize number bonds, students went to the Steve Wyborney website, Splat!
After “playing” some of the Splat numbers, students then created their own Splat! This was a fun and interactive learning activity. Most importantly, students visualized how numbers connect to each other.
Students Created Their Own Splats!
Finally, we did not get to look at all of the Splat! slides on the website. Therefore, this would be a great activity for your math student to do at home!
