Ms. Huffman recently did a contraction lesson with the Title I first graders at Norfolk Christian. The students and Ms. Huffman discussed what contractions were and then we practiced making contractions using a process called Contraction Surgery.
Students put on medical gloves and surgical masks. Ms. Huffman told them that they were going to do “Contraction Surgery.” They were each given a set of cards that they were going to make into contractions. They had scissors (scalpel) that they used to cut the cards to make the word into a contraction.
Our Contraction Surgery
After cutting the cards…
they put them back together with bandaids to make them into contractions.
The activity enhanced their surgical skills as well as their contraction skills.
