To celebrate Black History Month and the Olympic games, Ms Leonard’s fourth graders at Anna Julia Cooper learned about various African American Olympic athletes.
To introduce the lesson, Ms. Leonard showed the student a short video on Wilma Rudolph:
Then Ms. Leonard read aloud to the students The Quickest Kid in Clarksville by Pat Zietlow Miller.
We discussed the historical fiction book about Wilma Rudolph and compared and contrasted the two girls from the story.
Afterwards, students were randomly assigned an African American Olympic athlete to research. Students used graphic organizers to write down information.
Then they used their notes to write 3 paragraphs in their journals.
To integrate technology, the students typed up their reports using the Write About app on the iPads.
