Ms. Figueiredo-Strydom’s Title I students at St. Timothy are focusing on reading Non-Fiction books and articles about arctic and antarctic animals and applying 3 big vocabulary words:

  • Hibernation,
  • Migration, and
  • Adaptation.

They are using a KWHLAQ chart to help make sure they have learned something from the readings.

K – What do I already know? (experts or novices)
W – What do I want to know? (investigations and brainstorming)
HHow will I found out? (research and sources)
L – What did I like? What did I love? What did I learn?
A – How will I apply what I learned? (graphic organizer, posters or presentation)
Q – What questions do I have? (for later research, or reading from another author)

Arctic and Antarctic Animals - KWHLAQ

To simplify the overwhelming task of working through a wealth of information, all grades K-5 used graphic organizers to help them.

In grades 3, 4 and 5, we used the helpful Reading Tools checklist from Scholastic.
