Tidewater Virginia DAC Parent Workshop
January 20, 2011

-----------------------

On January 20th, 2011, a DAC workshop was held at St. Pius.  The theme of the workshop was Word Sorts.

The evening began with a working pizza dinner.  While eating dinner, families used conversation starts to prompt conversations that increase vocabulary and improve oral communication skills.

After dinner, the students went to the Title I room and played word sort, vocabulary and comprehension games.  The parents stayed in the cafeteria and participated in a Word Sort workshop led by Beth Estill, a Virginia Beach reading specialist and adjunct professor at UVA.  The parents found the workshop to be very informative and learned how children learn to read and spell.

After the workshop, the parents visited station set up by the Title I teachers.  Each station explained a different spelling stage.  Activities were demonstrated and parents were able to take home word study activities to do with their child at home.
