Internet Help for Parents
LEARN ABOUT THE INTERNET New to the web? Don't know the difference between hyperlinks and highlighted text? Then this web tutorial is for you. Made by the New Zealand Ministry of Education to introduce their teachers to the Internet, this interactive guide is equally helpful to American teachers and parents. It includes brief lessons on Internet language, history, culture, web browsers, searching and navigation as well email, discussions groups, FTP and more.
Want a more detailed tutorial? Something that will allow you to surf the net like a pro? Then try the Web Teacher by the National Cable Television Association. There's a Spanish version available, too.
Curious about what's going on on the web? Gail Junion-Metz's monthly columns on surfing the Internet in the School Library Journal will keep you up to date. Concerned about teaching your child Internet safety? Go to Disney Online to see Mickey Mouse and friends on Surf Swell Island for entertaining and effective instruction. Mickey and company's tropical adventures include the Cliffs of Mean Manners, Virus Caves, No Privacy Beach, and Tiki's Fun Stuff Village. You and your children can play games, print activities, test yourself with quizzes, and earn your own Internet Safety Certificate. Disney Online offers other fun ways to learn about Internet safety. You and your child can watch three helpful, revised children's stories: "Who's Afraid of Little Sweet Sheep?," addressing chat safety; "The Bad Apple," showing that unpleasant things can happen if you open email attachments; and "Web Mania," teaching email behavior rules. A great way to learn about online safety! |
