Make a 'Candle' for Winter Solstice
Make a Candle with "Flame" for the Winter Solstice

candleRead Night and the Candlemaker
by Wolfgang Somary. December 21
is the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, so make a candle to light your night.

Make a Candle with a empty paper towel or toilet paper roll, white paper, cotton balls, and a toothpick. You will also need scissors and glue.

  1. Cover the paper towel or toilet paper
roll with white paper, and attach it with
glue. This will be your candle.

  2. Stick a toothpick through the middle
of a cotton ball so some of it is sticking
out of the cotton ball. (The toothpick will be your candle's wick.)

  3. Print this page.
Cut out the flames (or draw and color
your own flames.) Glue them, back-
to-back onto the end of the toothpick.
     Flame, right

  4. Put glue around the inside top edge
of the candle. Gently stuff the cotton
ball into the top of the "candle" so the flame is outside the tube.

  5. Tear another cotton ball into bits. To
make them "wax" dripping down the
side of your candle, glue them onto
    your candle.

  6. If you want to decorate your candle
with holly, cut out the pictures below.
Glue them to the base of your
    candle.

  7. Now put your candle someplace
special, such as on your window sill
or on your family's dining table.
