Description of Grow and Tell

Each group of students grows a plant in the Title I classroom (if the classroom setting makes that feasible) from a Classroom Plant Kit that includes pots, pot domes, seeds, plant labeling sticks, and soil.

Teachers and students divide the components of the Classroom Plant Kit(s) so each student can also make his or her individual plant kit to place in a gallon sealable plastic bag to take home for growing a plant:

  • One plant pot
  • One plant pot dome
  • Seed or seeds (placed in a sealed envelope the student labels)
  • Enough soil for one pot (sealed in a envelope the student labels)
  • Plant labeling stick (student writes the name of his seeds)
  • Planting and Care Instructions

Students then write a five-sentence paragraph about the plants.  Pre-K, kindergarten, and first grade students may work as a group to write one paragraph together.

Teachers may select the type of five-sentence paragraph each student will write:

                        Descriptive or Informational Paragraph

1.      Main Idea Sentence

2.      Supporting Sentence

3.      Supporting Sentence

4.      Supporting Sentence

5.      Concluding Sentence

As an organizational aid for students, teachers will have a 5-part flower template.

Math Students’ Participation in Grow and Tell

Math students can participate in the Grow and Tell web activity by growing plants, and then using information about their plants to make bar or line graphs.  As examples, students can:

  • Measure the plants growth at regular intervals (in metric or standard measure, as selected by the teacher,) and then create bar or line graphs to display their plants growth.  Teachers might wish to use the measurements gathered by students to teach rounding units of measurement or to teach subtracting of mixed numbers (to determine how much a plant grew between time intervals.)

  • Another graphing activity would be for students to count at regular intervals the number of leaves or number of flowers on their plants and make bar or line graphs to display that information.

Teachers can take digital photographs the graphs and submit them for placement on the website.

Submission of Grow and Tell Paragraphs

Teachers can submit a typed version of each student’s paragraph (or digital images of math students’ graphs) to VirginiaTitleIBypass@gmail.com by FEBRUARY 16, 2009.  For each paragraph (or math student’s graph,) include the following additional information:

  1. Teacher’s name and school
  2. Grade Level
  3. Child’s first name OR “A Student” if the parents have not signed a permission to publish form.

Teachers submitting paragraphs are also encouraged to submit one digital photo per grade level per teacher.  Please label the digital photo to include the grade level it represents.  The photo might be of students with their group’s plant, students holding their “Paragraph Plants,” a bulletin board of the students “Paragraph Plants,” a child’s drawing of the plants or such.  Note that we can only put on the website photos of students or their work if the parents have granted permission to use those images.
